Adding your Linux VM to your Hosts file

To make it easier to access your assigned Linux system we recommend adding an entry to your hosts file so that you can access the system via a DNS name sipws rather than by its TCP/IP address, but doing so requires Administrator privilege.

Edit your hosts file

Open a Windows Command Prompt and use the following command to edit your hosts file:

powershell -Command "Start-Process notepad -Verb RunAs -ArgumentList 'C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts'"
Go to the bottom of the file and add a new host definition, replacing X.X.X.X with the IP address of your assigned Linux server:
X.X.X.X sipws
Save the changes to the file and close Notepad.

If you don't have local administrator privileges you will need to use the TCP/IP address of your Linux server throughout the workshop; whenever you see sipws used as a DNS name, use the TCP/IP address instead.
